Frequently asked questions
Short answers about what TransitScanner does and what it does not.
General
What is TransitScanner?
TransitScanner is a free, independent tool to compare train and bus fares across Europe. It asks the sellers what a journey costs, shows the answers side by side and sends you to the seller to buy the ticket.
Is TransitScanner free to use?
Yes. TransitScanner is free and needs no account.
Does TransitScanner sell tickets?
No. You buy from the seller: each result links to the seller's own page for that route and day. TransitScanner takes no payments and adds no fees.
Is TransitScanner affiliated with FlixBus or the railways?
No. TransitScanner is an independent project with no affiliation or partnership with FlixBus, BlaBlaBus or any of the railways whose fares it compares.
How does TransitScanner make money?
It takes no commission on tickets and there is no advertising on the site. A support button lets visitors give a voluntary donation.
Prices
Where do the prices come from?
From the sellers' own channels: our server asks each seller for the route and date you chose. Sellers read today: BlaBlaCar Bus, CP (Comboios de Portugal), Deutsche Bahn, dsb, Eurostar, FlixBus, Hellenic Train, Italo, Koleo (PKP), MÁV, NS, OUIGO, RegioJet, Renfe, SBB, SJ, sncb, Trenitalia, VR, Vy (Entur), ÖBB, České dráhy.
Why can the price at the seller differ from the one shown?
Fares change as seats sell. A card shows a fare a seller quoted, and where it is not a live quote it is marked with when it was last seen. Always check the price on the seller's page before you pay.
What does the "~" in front of a price mean?
The price is approximate: it was converted from the seller's own currency (shown in brackets) to euros, or it is an estimate or a price remembered from an earlier search. The seller charges in its own currency.
What is the "official range" on French high-speed trains?
For TGV INOUI and OUIGO, TransitScanner can show the fare range SNCF Voyageurs publishes as open data (ODbL). It is labelled "official range", used only where no real fare has been seen, and it is not a quote for a particular day.
Features
What is Everywhere mode?
Pick a starting city and Everywhere lists the destinations you can reach from it, sorted by price, so you can choose where to go by what it costs.
What are bus + train combinations?
Journeys made of a bus leg and a train leg. They are two separate tickets and you make the change yourself; the connection is not protected. The prices shown are the last ones seen.
What are split tickets?
You stay on the same train and keep your seat, but the ticket is bought in two parts, split at a station on the way. TransitScanner shows it when it saves at least €20. Two separate tickets mean no connection guarantee if the train is delayed.
Train or bus: how do I compare them?
Results for a date show coach and train journeys together, cheapest first, with duration and changes, so you can weigh price against time.
Is there a price calendar?
Yes. The price calendar shows fares for the days around your date and marks the cheapest day. Days with a remembered price are marked with "~"; check the current fare.
Booking and refunds
Who handles my booking, changes and refunds?
The seller. You buy on the seller's own site, so booking, changes, cancellations and refunds follow the seller's terms and go through the seller's support.
Does TransitScanner hold my personal or payment data?
No. There are no accounts and no payments on TransitScanner. Payment details are entered on the seller's site, under the seller's privacy policy.
